TIMOTHY’S FIRST CHRISTMAS AS A KID IN THE VILLAGE…

CHRISTMAS

Fond memories are now flooding back. The first real Christmas I remembered was when I was nine YEAR old. My elder brother bought over-sized trousers and shirts for me. I was told they were over-sized so that I will wear them for many years. Bata sandal was the designer shoe that was given to me. My mother insisted that I will wear the sandals only on the Christmas day, the bazaar day on 26th and the New Year day in order not to wear it out. On 23rd that year, I was taken to village barber, Nwafor, for a Christmas hair cut which was a big deal then. After bathing to put on my new Christmas dress, my mother will use a cream called DAN FULANI on me. This yellow cream is both body and hair cream. The cream sometimes magnet both sands and flies to me but I felt on top of the world in my over-sized clothes. The greatest joy is eating together with my family. Traditionally, the menu is white rice with ofe akwu. The meat has always been chicken. As the last child of the family, I have the rare privilege of extra meat after my normal portion. This is the head and neck of the Chicken which my mother will announce with a Grammy-award fanfare that the meat is given to me for faithfully sweeping the compound and the road leading to our house everyday.
We will attend some social functions like live drama presentations and sports festival which was football competition among the various branches in my town. Visiting relatives for the exchange of gifts was a must
